West Bengal is an Indian state located in the east of the country and its capital is Kolkata. It is the India’s forth most populated state; it is spread over an area of 34,267 sq mi with a total of about 9.1 million people residing in it. This state mainly lies between Himalayas and Bay of Bengal; it is bordered by Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, Sikkim and Assam. West Bengal is also bordered by some countries like of Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.
The capital of the state is Kolkata, which was formerly called Calcutta. This city is located on the banks of river hoogly, Kolkata is a megacity and it serves as a major centre for education, commerce and culture & one of the India’s oldest ports is situated here.
The language spoken majorly in west Bengal is Bengali. The Bengali language posses a rich literary heritage, shared with neighboring Bangladesh. West Bengal has a long tradition in folk literature, evidenced by the Shreekrishna kirtanaThakurmar jhuli, and stories related to Gopal Bhar. In the nineteenth and twentieth century, Bengali literature was modernised in the works of authors such as Bankim Chandra chattopadhyay, Michael madhusudan Dutt and Rabindranath Tagore.
The Baul tradition is a unique heritage of Bengali folk music; other folk music forms include Gombhira and Bhawaiya. Bengali dance forms draw from folk traditions, especially those of the tribal groups, as well as the broader Indian dance traditions.
West Bengal has a total of 18 universities. Kolkata has played an important role in the development of the modern education system in India. In West Bengal schools are run by the state government or by private organizations, including religious institutions mainly in English or Bengali also in Hindi and Urdu. The state has several higher education institutes of national importance including Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Indian institute of Management Calcutta (the first IIM), Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Indian Statistical Institute, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (the first IIT).
This state has a very rich and vivid history; Bengal in ancient times was a site of several major kingdoms called as Janapadas. It was a place of succession of large empires such as Maurya
Empire, Gupta Empire, Pala Empire, Sena Dynasty and Bengal Sultanate. Later with the beginning of British Rule in India in eighteenth century Bengal served as the capital of British India when East India Company was established in India.
