Uttar Pradesh is a large state located in the north of the country India, it was earlier called as United Provinces when it was formed that is in 1937. Later it was renamed as Uttar Pradesh in 1950. The state is bordered by Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. It also bordered by the country of Nepal to its north. Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh, and it is also the largest city of U.P. the state extends over an area of 2, 43,290 sq meters. Uttar Pradesh is the fourth largest state of India by area, and it is considered to be the most populous state with over 200 million inhabitants.
Uttar Pradesh is a state that displays a range of vibrant culture, across a total of 78 districts there is a great variety in customs and traditions amongst them. One can easily make out the difference between the culture of eastern and western part of Uttar Pradesh, mainly in languages that are spoken, or the cuisine, or outfit of the people. Kathak is a classical dance form, that originated in U.P., some local forms of music that are a part of Uttar Pradeshi culture are kajari, sohar, qawwali. Rasiya, thumri, birha, chaiti, and sawani.
Diwali and Ram Navmi are popular festivals of the state, Kumbh Mela, organised in the month of Maagha (Feb-March), is a major festival held every three years in rotation at Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain, on the river Ganges and Nasik on the Godavari River. The cuisine has an influence of different communities and emperors of different kingdoms that ruled in here, for example, there is strong influence of Mughal, and Awadh in the their food especially in Lucknow which is also called as the city of Nawabs.
