Mizoram is a state located in north-east of the country, it is amongst one of the seven sisters, and it spreads over an area of 21,087sq km. ‘Mizoram’ means ‘land of hill people’, it is the 2nd least populated state of the country. Mizoram has a population of approx. 1,091,014 people with Aizawl being its capital. It is estimated that 91% of the state is forested. Mizoram shares its borders with 3 of the seven sister states Assam, Tripura and Manipur. This state portrays an incredibly beautiful landscape with a vast majority of area confined by greenery into the magnificent hills.
The culture of the people and social life of its tribes has changed tremendously over past 100 years. Contemporary people of Mizoram celebrate Christmas, Easter and other Christian celebrations replacing many of old tribal customs and practices. In modern Mizoram, much of the social life often revolves around church. Community establishments exist in urban centers that arrange various social events, sports event, musical concerts, comedy shows and such activities.
Traditional festivals in Mizoram revolve around various stages of jhum cultivation. Community festivals are called Kut in local language, and there are major and minor Kuts such as Chapchar Kut, Thalfavang Kut, Mim Kut and Pawl Kut.
There are several traditional dances of Mizoram like Cheraw, chai, khuallam and chheihlam. As far as music is concern, traditional tunes of Mizoram are very soft and gentle, the guitar is a popular instrument and Mizos enjoy country style music most.
TOURISM- Mizoram is a place with rich diversity of flora and fauna, and pleasant climate. It is an awesome destination for bird-watchers to visit in here. Wild Water Buffalo, Sumatran rhinoceros, elephants are some of the mammals that have been spotted here in the past. The tourism ministry regulates the maintenance and up gradation of tourist lodges throughout the state. Both domestic and International tourists step in here to admire the beauty of this state. The visitors have to get an inner line permit or special permit whereas the international tourists have to get a visitors pass on arrival. Tourism is one of the few sources of economy of the state.
EDUCATION-The state has long enjoyed higher literacy rates than average literacy rates for India. It has a reached 92% of literacy rate as compared to 74% average for India. Mizoram is second only to Kerala. There are 3,894 schools in Mizoram, of these, 42% are publicly owned and managed by Central/State governments, 28% are private without government subsidies, 21% are private with government subsidies, and the rest are primary and middle schools.
Mizoram has several educational establishments under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education, including universities, colleges and other institutions. Within Mizoram University, there are 29 undergraduate departments including 2 professional institutions affiliated with the university. Other well known institutes are National Institute of Technology Mizoram, ICFAI University, Mizoram, College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, Selesih, Aizawl, Mizoram and Regional Institute of Paramedical and Nursing Aizawl.
