Maharashtra is a state located in west-central India and is the second most populous state in the country, the state has a total population of 110 million. Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra with a population of about 18 million. The capital is home to the very famous Hindi film industry. Mumbai is considered the financial and commercial capital of india and it serves as the headquarters of all major banks, financial institutions and insurance companies in the country. Nagpur is considered the 2nd capital of the state and serves as a major tourist place due to its cold environment. Maharashtra is one of the wealthiest and the most developed states in India, it contributes 25% of the country's industrial output and 23.2% of its GDP.
Maharashtra has played a pioneering role in the development of education system in India; it has a total of 24 universities. a large number of famous  autonomous institutes including Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Institute of Chemical Technology, Homi Bhabha National Institute, Walchand College of Engineering, Veermata Jijabai Technological institute etc. the University of Pune, The National defense academy, Film and Television Institute of India and  Armed Forces Medical College was  established after the independence of India.
The schools in Maharashtra mainly use Hindi, English and Marathi languages for education, the secondary schools are affiliated with the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Maharashtra state board of secondary and Higher Education.
Maharashtra displays a rich and vivid culture ranging from exquisite cuisine to traditional Marathi attire and from music to literature, films and theatre. Maharashtrian cuisine mainly includes wheat, rice, jowar, vegetables and lentils as its staple and few of the popular Marathi dishes are purn poli, batata wada, pav bhaji and modak. Maharashtra has contributed a lot to the Indian classical music. Its vibrant folk form includes Powada, Bharuds and Gondhals. Marathi dance forms draw from folk traditions. Lavani is popular form of dance in the state and koli dance is among the most popular dance forms of Maharashtra. Marathi women commonly wear a traditional saree called as nauvari or lugadi as well as the modern dresses like shalwar kameez and skirts etc.

During 4th and 3rd century BC Maurya Dynasty ruled Maharashtra. . Around 230 BCE Maharashtra came under the rule of the Satavahana dynasty for 400 years. In 90 AD Vedishri, son of the Satavahana king made junnar , thirty miles north of Pune, the capital of his kingdom. . In the early 14th century, the Yadava dynasty, which ruled most of present-day Maharashtra, was overthrown by the Delhi sultanate ruler Ala-Ud-Din Khilji. The state of Maharashtra was also ruled by Gupta Empire, Chalukya Dynasty, Rashtrakuta Empire, Kharavela, Kadambas, and Vakataka and finally the Yadava ruled.
