Madhya Pradesh is a state located at the centre of the country, thus has got its name which means central province in English. M.P is also called as the heart of India due to its location. Madhya Pradesh is the 2nd largest state by area that is of about 308,245sq km and it ranks 6th among all the Indian states in terms of population. There are 51 districts in this state with a total of about 75 million inhabitants. It is bordered by Uttar Pradesh to its north-east, Chhattisgarh to south-east, Maharashtra to south, Gujarat to west, and Rajasthan to north-west. Bhopal is the capital of Madhya Pradesh, with Indore being the largest city of it.
Madhya Pradesh portrays a variety of religions followed by people across the state representing vivid culture and language. The language mainly spoken by the inhabitants here is Hindi, and it is also the official language of the state. However Marathi, and English is also spoken, there are several regional variants of Hindi language spoken in different parts like Malvi in Malwa, Bundeli in Bundelkhand, Bhageli in Bhagelkhand, Nimadi in Nimar.
M.P has three World Heritage sites (declared by UNESCO), namely Khajuraho Group of monuments, Buddhist monument at Sanchi, and Rock shelters of Bhimbetka. There are several other significant and scenic sites in M.P like Amarkantak, Ajaigarh, Chanderi, Vidisha, Bhopal and others.
Madhya Pradesh is well-known for its contribution in classical and folk music. Some of the renowned Hindustani classical music gharanas in Madhya Pradesh comprise the Maihar gharana, the Gwalior gharana and Senia gharana. Tansen and Baiju Bawra the two most known singers of medieval India were born here near Gwalior.
Madhya Pradesh has a literacy rate of 70.60%, it is among literate states of the country. The state has 105,592 primary schools, 6,352 high schools and 5,161 higher secondary schools; it also has 208 engineering & architecture colleges, 208 management institutes and 12 medical colleges to shape the future of the country.
